This new generation of 911's probably represents the biggest change to the iconic Porsche in decades. Not because of any daring alteration to the looks - as you can see, this is merely a nip and tuck of the version launched in 2011 called 991- but because of the changes under the bonnet.

The normally aspirated engines have been replaced with a new 3.0-litre engine fitted with twin turbochargers. So on paper this provides more power and better economy than the old 3.4-litre and 3.8-litre engines.

As you can imagine, this has set alarm bells ringing for Porsche purists, but get behind the wheel of this generation 911 and you'll discover that the addition of a smaller turbo engine only brings benefits.

If this is your first experience of the newer 991's, It's not just the engine that feels great, Porsche have never disappointed in this area, It's the handling! Personally speaking, having owned and driven 911's since my first 911 SC I have always preferred the drive and handling of the 987's and later the 981's (Boxster & Cayman). Only because, with a mid engine the balance of handling and flat cornering is second to none. But the looks of a 911 has always had me in the balance.

Because the new 991's are slightly bigger and now 50mm wider on the front axel, for me, it's transformed the handling, It seems to handle more like it's younger 981 with no longer a light front end seemingly ready to understeer, but so much more planted, giving a flatter feel through undulating twisties. Probably one of the nicest balanced Porsche's I have ever driven
