History

More than fifty years ago, researchers at Mobil faced a daunting challenge from the U.S. military. As planes returned to their aircraft carriers, cold in-flight temperatures froze the wheel-bearing grease in the landing gear, leading to bearing failure. Mobil devised a way of synthesising grease that retained its lubricating characteristics over a wider range of temperatures than was possible with mineral based grease.

In 1974, Mobil 1™ synthetic engine oil was born and as recently as 2002 was reformulated to contain the Proprietary Multi-Layer Anti-Wear Technology. Mobil 1™ has been at the forefront of automotive lubricants technology for over 30 years. Through its ongoing involvement in motor racing has presented unique opportunities to develop and test products under extreme conditions, the benefits of which can also be seen today in Mobil’s on and off-track products.

Using the same engine oil which succeeds on the race track offers Porsche owners significant benefits in everyday driving: reliable engine operation under all temperature and operating conditions, reduced pollutant emissions and longer oil change intervals. This explains why more than a million Porsche vehicles have now been factory-filled with Mobil 1 and why Mobil 1™ is recommended by Porsche for every refill or all service oil changes.

Why Mobil 1?

Mobil 1 uses alkylated naphthalenes as the cosolvent. Some less expensive brands use diesters. Some engine oils marketed as “Fully Synthetic” are actually made with Group III basestocks that are more accurately called semi-synthetic. These are less expensive.

Is Mobil 1 high quality oil?

Testing under the current industry performance standard from the International Lubricants Standardisation            and Approval Committee (ILSAC) shows that Mobil 1™ outperforms not only conventional motor oils, but                  other fully synthetics as well. In fact, it performs far better than industry standards.
